Why Join The Barrie Yacht Club

From sportsmanship to friendship, from our ships to yours, there’s always so much to do and get involved in at the Barrie Yacht Club. While the Barrie Yacht Club is dedicated to provide a safe, family-friendly environment that encourages the sport of sailing through skills development, education and competition and fellowship. Our members are the ones with the passion to create a welcoming environment for all who share a love of sailing and water sports.

When you become a member you are invited to meet and learn from fellow sailing enthusiasts; take lessons at our Sailing School for adults and youth, use the club boats, participate on a committee and socialize with friends and family on land or in the waters of Lake Simcoe and beyond.

Applying for a membership is a three-step process that begins online through our membership system. Prospective members are also required to meet the Executive for a short interview and membership endorsement. More information on the application process and requirements is available upon request.

The BYC is volunteer based and relies on the continued commitment of all members to actively participate in the administration, operation and maintenance of the Club. As a condition of membership, Club members in all categories are required to fulfill their minimum number of Club service hours (as set by the Board each year). Members not participating in this program are charged a fee.

There are numerous benefits to membership in the BYC. We have three categories of membership Voting Member with full harbour rights, Associate Member and Social Member. 

Sailing Events

Weekly evening races and frequent weekend regattas are well-attended and have a friendly though competitive atmosphere. A few of our regular sailors are world champions in a variety of classes. It is usually easy to get a crewing position on race nights. Check out our racing schedule here. 

In addition, Associate Members have access to free use of club boats, while Voting members can choose to use the club keel boats two 26 foot Mirages.

Social Events

From the summer barbeques to the Women on the helm regatta, frequent special events are held throughout the sailing season. and the club atmosphere is uniquely relaxed, friendly and informal. Check out this month’s schedule of events here.

BYC is renowned on Lake Simcoe for its successful Learn-To-Sail programs for both children and adults. Find out more.

Reciprocal Club Memberships

BYC membership entitles you to membership with Sail Ontario and Sail Canada, providing you privileges at numerous other Yacht Clubs around the world. Members also enjoy discounts club regalia & team gear discount rates with Helly Hansen and discounts with Coleman Products. As well as, preferred member rates with the Sail Canada Group Home & Auto insurance program.

Boat Sharing Program

Members can enjoy sailing on the BYC Boat Share Program boat from early May to late September and can participate in all other BYC activities throughout the term of their membership, subject to BYC policies.

Membership Categories and Rates

BYC Membership Approval Process

BYC membership is easy and affordable.

We have a four-step process to apply to become a member.

  1. Pre-registration – Join our waitlist 
  2. You will be contacted by the membership committee to complete an application
  3. Your membership will be reviewed by the Executive and you will be contacted for any additional information. An interview will be scheduled once all information has been reviewed.
  4. Participate in a mandatory short interview with the Executive.
  5. If approved, finalize membership information and payment.

 

Membership Categories

Standard Member
Our main membership which allows the individual to enjoy all privileges of the Club.

Associate Member
Associate Membership available for individuals as an option while on a waiting list for a wet or dry sail slip allocations.

Social Member
Social Memberships are available for individuals wanting to participate in club events and access the club facilities without using the sailing fleet or harbour or dry sail facilities.

Spouse Associate Member
A Spouse Associate Membership is available to a partner of a standard member.

Junior Member
Junior Membership is available for youth of standard members ages 8-17. (Age is determined based on an individual’s age on January 1st of the year.)

Junior Associate Member
Junior Associate Membership is for youth of standard memberships between the ages of 18-25. A Junior Associate Member may also exercise the same privileges as a Dry Sail Member upon payment of fees equivalent to those paid by Dry Sail Members. A Junior Associate Member shall also have harbour privileges with respect to the operation of any vessel moored by his parent(s) or guardian(s) in the Club harbour.

Senior Member
Senior membership is available to any individual that is 65 years of age or older who held a standard membership for more than 10 years and no longer wished to access harbour rights.

Non-Resident Member
Option available if you have no residence within 50 kilometres of the limits of the City of Barrie.

Honorary Member
Occasionally, an Honorary Member is selected for a specified term by unanimous vote at a general meeting.

You can add your name to our waitlist to ensure you are in the priority list for membership. The date and time is recorded when you add yourself to the waitlist. You will be contacted by the membership committee.

Please be advised that wet slips for keelboats are in very limited supply. We encourage you to submit your application, however it does not guarantee a slip and is based on availability and size of boat. We do work on a seniority system and will respond accordingly as applications are submitted through this system.
